Toyota has announced prices and spec for the new 3+1 iQ city car, which will start from £9495 and is available to order now.

Initially the iQ is only available with the three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, which puts out just 99g/km of CO2, enough to win the iQ free road tax, and achieve a claimed 65.7mpg.

The iQ is also offered with a ‘Multidrive’ constantly variable transmission for an extra £1000, although this pushes CO2 emissions up to 110g/km.

 

 HOW MUCH!?!

 Am I the only one that thinks a car like this should be nearer half that price?  Can't you get a Seat Ibiza Ecomotive for 10k? Not my cup of tea but it has an extra seat, room for luggage/shopping and does a similar MPG with £0 road tax.

 

Fair enough it's a clever design but I don't get why you would buy it.....

Would someone go in a showroom to look at an Aygo and say "Nice, but I think it's a bit big for me.  Have you anything smaller?"

Hmmm...... That's a bit spendy!

I like the idea and the engineering behind this car but the price is eye watering!

I can't wait to see Gordon Murray's compact car project come to fruition.  From what I have seen reported, that should be just as space efficient and a fraction of the price.

The CO2 of the 107 2tronic/Aygo MMT is also lower than the IQ CVT, the IQ looks a bit of a runt to me.

Agreed. It's ridiculous, the price appears to be based entirely on its minute size, because in every other respect it doesn't seem to have merit. Lacklustre car on paper - not as economical as you'd expect given the weight/engine size/price, and very slow. I think a lot of the blame must lie with that engine.

What a rip of for an ugly attempt at a Smart rip off.  The Smart For 2 Pure retails at £7060 on the road with the high spec luxury Passion version at £9165 on the road.  Smart cars have a hip and loyal following, whereas Toyota with their bland and ugly approach to styling do not.  It will never sell at that price and christ it's ugly.

Aren't Toyota's for old folks anyway??

Takes some doing to make a Smart look like good value, when there are things like a Vauxhall Agilia for £6495.

Interesting car, but these prices are way too high. I know they are trying to make this an up-market model but in the current economic climate people will expect a small car to have a small price. As a matter of curiousity, does anyone know how the UK prices compare to the Japanese ones ?
