May & Hammond To Leave Top Gear?

    Jul 04, 2008 9:37 PM

I nearly had a heart attack before. I read on a website that Top Gear's future is in doubt because of an argument over salaries - Clarkson currently gets quite a bit more than James and Richard. Apparently, they want a salary which is more in line with his, and it could lead to the team splitting up. I don't really know how much truth is in this - you know what some people are like - but wouldn't it be a complete and utter disaster if Top Gear were to end?!?!?!?!! Let's hope someone's just overhyping what is probably some tiny matter - LONG LIVE BBC TOP GEAR!

May & Hammond need TopGear more than JC, especially Hammond as he has used TopGear's status to springboard into other presenting. Without it he would just become the Gary Barlow of motoring presenters. A woman presenter on TG would be cool. Someone like that Vicky on FG. Come to think of it, Autocar needs a high profile woman in the team. A bit of leg in the mag car pictures would be welcome.

Did anyone else feel that Mel Gibson's remake of the 'Life of Brian' wasn't anywhere near as funny as the original? SourceTheMarket

Yes, awful. Almost as upsetting as the day Busted called it a day.

I am not sure that Hammond and May leaving top gear is what will stop it.  Possibly the lack of a studio and test track if the re-development of Dunsfold where the series is shot could be a more serious issue.

The series is still very popular, just look at the audience size now, but they do have keep the format fresh.  Certainly a female presenter would be good, but they would need to make her a proper petrol head and not a patronising token.

I think Top Gear's format is great for what it is. They've got subtle changes in the new series but why change a tried-and-tested formula? What it's successfully done is brought car journalism into the homes of thousands of people who otherwise wouldn't watch it. People like my parents.

They sure as hell wouldn't sit down and watch (or enjoy) Fifth Gear, for example.

May and Hammond won't leave, it's their biggest and most successful project and they both evidently love it!

Judging by how much fun they must have had whilst filming the Nissan GTR vs Bullet Train race on Sunday 13th July's episode, they wouldn't leave. Sabine is still set to make a return to Top Gear this series - which should be fun. The show is still fresh and a proper entertainment/comedy programme in itself. Hammond & May are here to stay, and so is Top Gear. Hooray!

He may have used it as a spring board, but no longer needs Top Gear. I think Top Gear needs them as much as Clarkson. The show is about them as much as the cars we can't afford.

Top Gear, according to May, Hammond and Clarkson is just three ordainary blokes messing around with cars. Eg: When Hammond crashed there were rumors that Top Gear wouldn't be back on TV which shows how important Hammond is to the Top Gear team. It wouldn't be the same without him and May.

Clarkson is a prat. He has turned into the person he used to ridicule. Anyone that uses the phrase 'The type of people' is clearly a snob. I admire him for making millions out of the motoring public, having a house in the IOM and getting away with mediocre TV for years. Eastenders has big audiences but that doesn't make it a good programme. Top Gear is about as spontaneuos as a Party Conference. Odd how there's always a camera on the bend that Clarkson or the other muppets crash. Well that's upset a lot of people but it has to be said. The programme is stale and tedious.

Well, it's a car programme which MOST petrolheads love.
