  • Honda Jazz 1.4 SE

    May 18, 2008 1:17 PM

Given that it was launched back at the start of 2002, it would be natural to think that the Honda Jazz would now have been overrun by younger competitors, for such is the nature of progress. But that’s not the way it’s turned out.

The Jazz proves that sound fundamental design is still the most important criteria if a car is to have staying power, even in these fickle and fashion-conscious 21st century times. Indeed for most of that time it has been the clear class leader among small ...Read the full article

I agree with much of what is said but cannot accept the comment about the CVT auto option. My wife has a 2002 SE with CVT and it is a joy to drive. According to the statistics there is a minimal drop in performance or economy. My wife generally gets around 45-48mpg in her daily motoring - largely semi rural drives of around 5 miles at a time. Longer runs on the motorway gives over 50mpg providing you do not cruise over 80mph. Combined with the light, precise steering the auto box makes the Jazz such an easy car to drive. If you want a little more fun you can always use the manual override system with buttons on the steering wheel to choose one of the 7 pre-set gears - but frankly it's hardly worth it. The car may not be a hot rod but its peppy enough for everyday needs. But let's face it the Jazz is about ease of driving, superb practicality, great economy and cast iron build quality and reliability. No other small car comes near it as an overall package even if its ride is not the best around.

Never quite understood why Autocar posts these reviews on the web site, bearing in mind they are so old?!?!

The Jazz, a car which was supposed to bring down the average age of a Honda driver.  The Honda that was meant to appeal to trendies, with its flexibility and space.  Hmmm.

Have you ever seen anyone under fifty driving one of these things?  No?

My father (66) has had a couple and is currently driving around in his 1.4 CVT.  He loves the practicality (the way the seats fold in the rear), he loves the ground clearance because it helps his knees, and he loves the big clear buttons on the stereo.

I am not seeing the draw for a young and trendy here!

Don't get me wrong, they are great cars.  Bit numb on the steering and the CVT version is hopeless on fuel consumption (and it feels like your driving a video game), but apart from that not bad overall.

There is hope however.  The series two is coming (delayed in the UK because the old one is still selling so well), and again the promise of a more youthful image.

Despite all this I'm not sure - from a business point of view - that's the right move.  After all, the grey pound has been good for Honda.
