This is the most potent version of the TT yet, its substantially reworked 2.0-litre turbo generating 268bhp, 21bhp more than the 3.2 V6, whose Quattro four-wheel drive system it shares.

That makes the TTS good for a sprint to 62mph in 5.4sec, which you can shave to 5.2sec if you order the car with Audi’s £1400 S Tronic double clutch paddle shift. Both versions also reined in to 155mph.

Just ordered one of these to replace my old 3.2 DSG. Anyone suggesting that a base Cayman would be preferable to the TTS is, in my opinion, missing the point. The TT ( in coupe form ) is a fast, comfortable and practical car.

It has a decent boot, you can get passengers in the back if you have to (for a short journey) but most of all, like all Audi's the cabin is a

    great place to spend time.

A car that combines this level of performance with exceptional fuel consumption and also happens to be great looking is to be applauded. I average around 30mpg with my 3.2 and I'm expecting considerably more with the TTS.

To get a Cayman with anything like the specification of a TTS would cost well north of 40K. My TTS with S-Tronic, Bose sound system, cruise control, metallic paint and 19" wheels is about 37K.

It's a bargain, really, especially with the expected residuals

I  have Just purshased one these cars, with most of the extras selling my 2003 TT coupe 225 bhp.

And I must say I'm well impressed. Even my mate who has a Porsche Boxer is.

Completely agree, the reviewer has missed the point here. If comparing a Cayman, you'd be looking at a Standard Cayman for that money which crawls to 60 in 6.1, yet costs over 3 grand more and you dont even get heated seats. Dont get me wrong, the Cayman is a great car - I actually test drove a Cayman S the day before deciding to order the TTS. With the extras I wanted (sat nav, BOSE etc) the Cayman S would have come in at 52K. The TTS I ordered with s-tronic gets to 60 in 5.2 seconds (0.2 seconds faster) and cost 11K less.

Would like to see Top Gear put a TTS up against a standard Cayman on the track!

I've just part-exed a 2006 997 Carrera S for a new TTS (plus a cheque, of course!) and I'm really pleased. Okay, so it's not quite as good in corners, sounds less fruity and is a tad less fast, but it's still a really good drive and is vastly more refined.

The main reasons for changing was that, great car though it was, the 911 cost me £3k a year in running costs (less fuel) and I was losing well over £1k a month in depreciation too. The TTS also does 50% more mpg and is in a lower CO2 band, so will save me a fortune day-day and should hold its value well too for the next year or two.

I think the critics should try driving one - especially with the S-Tronic (DSG) box, which is amazing. I never thought I'd ever buy an automatic before I tried it.

In pure driving terms, the TTS can't quite compete with a Porsche (I had a Boxster S before the 911 too), but I can assure readers it isn't all that far behind, and even leads in some areas, such as comfort, the interior and (in my view) overall build quality too.

Test drove a TTS few weeks ago (opposite a TT TDi - I know, futile, pointless attempt to force head to overcome heart), and am looking forward to taking delivery in a couple of days. Second TT, after a gap. This is the TT I always wanted the first time around, but could never quite afford. Awesome. Okay, not a Porsche, but as an everyday, practical car, fantastic.
