Royal Dutch Shell and BP have posted record profits for the first quarter of 2008, thanks to the rising price of oil, which is currently almost $120 per barrel.
Shell posted profits of $7.8bn (£3.9bn), up from $6.9bn in 2007, and BP made $6.5bn (£3.3bn), a huge rise of 48 per cent over last year.
The figures were announced lorry drivers travelled into central London to protest against the price of diesel, which has risen a massive 30 per cent over the last year.

The British Government is in a bit of a 'vice' here to put it mildly.

Their anti-oil, anti-car, anti-motorist policies, which all too easily forgets the massive benefits oil and cars has brought the country for nearly a century is coming back to bite them where it hurts!

Not satisfied with 300% tax on fuel they've greedily tax-grabbed further with new CO2 taxes that don't help the greenary at all, just helps their crumbling Politburo public finances and the biggest growth in the Nanny-Bully State wage-roll and spy-cameras since communism fell.

The higher the oil price goes the more the public look at 300% tax on fuel and focus on on the real issue. Greedy tax grabbing Nu Labour and its anti-motorist policies.

Already up a creek without a paddle over Ethanol these bunch of losers are caught up between a capatalist market and their centralised greedy State. The truckers haven't muc time for greedy politicians (their livelihoods depend on an efficient energy policy). Only a matter of time until motorists hit their horns too.

It's a vice of their own making and Labours folly that they can tax energy how they like, no matter how pig-ignorant their policies. 

If cars became emission free, one can only imagine what the next excuse would be to over-tax and vilify the motor car?

They've never had a good press being blamed for messing up cities and towns as though it was the first time a form of transport has done this.

Think of the horse droppings of the Victorian Times. The stench, the flies, poor working class fellow slipping in a large fresh one and going base over tip on his way to the Gin shop.....

Thats another thing, why do so many make a fuss of dog muck, then say nothing about the mini-Matahorn of horse poo that has to be treated like a roundabout in the road? No doubt some equestrianarian will defend this stating the chemical nature of horse poo, but I don't care, if it comes out of an animals bottom it cannot be good for the environment. I know it's not good for my nose, nor my appetite. Then there are their no 1's, a waterfall of euqarian aqua that flow freely to muddy the already steaming pile of chunks put there moments before.

to the topic: it's not the profits that irritate me, more the slices that the government take along the way.

Schwenck - just in case you didn't get the crystal clear message of the last 100yrs of economic development it is centrally controlled economies don't work, they go bankrupt - free markets do work (see living standards - America v Russia 1940-2000).

Nu Labour sold the country "things can only get better" with a couple of very big porkies about them believing in free markets (did you have a choice about Ethanol being forced down your throat?) and passing power down to the people (did you see any Labour Party promised Referendum before passing power to the unelected, unaccountable EEC Politbruo?).

Plato spoke of this when he spoke of the unwritten contract between the governed and those in power. That is - we give up certain 'freedoms' for the protection of the government and the state. All the things you speak of would seem to fit into that box.

Labour have gone from Nannies to Bullies and I for one have had enough and fully intend to do all I can to bring Ethanol fraud, the climate con, the smoking ban and the congestion zone scam down.. and I'd encourage anyone with an ounce of responsibility or belief in their country or who values democracy to do the same.

Call me old fashioned but I believe when those public representatives deceive you with spin, tax the death out of your living standards and deliver sweet f.a. I regard the contract as null and void.

Further cut subsidies to public transport (saving £8-£10bn a year) and invest in improving the road network.

I slept well last night - got up - checked my emails and had another look at these comments - I'm still wetting myself laughing at it - it's so funny.

What you call murder the realists call 'national interest' - your tiny world's rules are dictated by an oil based economy - and that is why UK PLC is operating out in the Middle East. No-one is going to admit that so it's dressed up as something else - get over it because for you to charge around at 200mph in your car (as you so often like to claim) that's what required.
