  • Cadillac saloon goes rear-drive

    Apr 16, 2008 11:49 AM

Cadillac is to ditch its unsuccessful Saab-based BLS and build a striking new rear-drive saloon in its latest bid to rival BMW’s 3-series and Audi’s A4.
Called Project Alpha and due in Europe in 2011, the new car will be a key part of General Motors’ latest efforts to make Cadillac a global player. But it will use a rear-wheel drive platform that is currently under development in the US. That platform, also called Alpha, is a development of the chassis that formed the basis of the Holden Tora...Read the full article

Yes both elegant and very funky. The Americans are finding a design identity. It may be based on European themes (Audi C-pillar, Merc flanks etc) but it definately has that brash kitch American feel and is quite yummy. Not sure the appeal in Europe when it comes to parting with hard cash but certainly tempting if it can go round corners!!

GM are missing out on the terrific Torana styling from Holden the car looks much better than the Caddy. Also the Pontiac G8 is built on the Holden production line in Elizabeth South Australia not in the HSV plant

The Torana is nice looking but not a patch on the Caddy picture in Autocar! However, having just read the paper edition (which incidentally appears to be getting less and less relevant as most of the mag has been pre-published on the web), it looks like Autocar have done an 'artists impression' of what they think it will look like rather than base it on any actual spy shots or leaked photos, so who knows what it will actually look like? That said, the current BLS is, I think, a very attractive car and has some real visual impact, which is somewhat surprising given that it is based on the old-ish Saab. One issue with the larger Holdens is that only the cooking models look really good. Look at the current and previous Commodore for example. This wasn't the case back in the 70's where all the models looked pretty good (eg 1972 Torana).
