The days of braving the bitter elements while filling up your car may soon end thanks to the “Tankpitstop” robotic fuel filler.
Dutch inventors have created a £55,000 car fuelling robot which works by registering the car on arrival at the pump and matching fuel types and fuel filler designs. The arm then extends from the fuel pump, opens the tank, and grabs the fuel nozzle before filling the tank as quickly and efficiently as a human arm.

I read something a while ago about the harmful fumes which come off the fuel as it goes into the tank, I think in the states thay have a suction device which removes them. The robot, being lungless, will not be affected perhaps they should use this in their sales pitch too.

The smell is the best bit - it reminds you of the fact that you have petrol in your veins.

It reminds you why you like to drive just before you go inside to pay and have the heart ripped right out of you.

You'll be telling us man has walked on the moon next.

A £55,000 pointless exercise. Is filing up not all part of the joy of motoring?

The pertol smell is so addictive, you cant help but get a lung-full when filling it up.

Incidently, i was behind an alpha again the other day who put £55 in his.  Mine will only take about 35 litres from empty, what is everyone elses capacity?

As i understand it old leaded four star was fragrant but harmful when snorted copiously. Unleaded is highly carcinogenic so for gods sake don't stand there beathing it in.

 Do what i do. Deep gulps of air to fill up on oxygen. then pop the fuel cap. then leap from the car dash manically to remove the cap, tank up and run to the kisok without breathing. Takes some doing when you're putting 60 litres in i can tell you. I've been helped up numerous times by some little old dear.

I hate filling up (with petrol that is).  It might have something to do with the fact that 64 litres of super ul only gets me about 300 miles on average!

64 litres?  that is crazy!  Thats almost twice mine.

 With me biking into work i only need to put about £10 a week in, depending what im doing at the weekend.

I filed up my 159 from empty last week, it cost 74 quid, 67 litres, judging by the needle it will probably hold 70/75 litres.

Legacies are not known for their parsimonius use of fuel although my economy is better than what is quoted by Subaru around town and 24mpg average over 13.5k miles is not bad for permanent awd and a 3 litre considering I do very few motorway miles.

I actually put about 50-55 litres in because the light comes on very early and there always seems to be loads left in the tank - never had it over 60 litres yet.
