  • New Skoda Superb in detail

    Jan 25, 2008 10:08 AM

Skoda has officially revealed its second-generation Superb ahead of the premium saloon’s official launch at the Geneva motor show in March.
The Czech brand’s new flagship is a significantly larger and more luxurious proposition than its predecessor, however its most innovative feature is a practical one.
Called the ‘twin door system’, it allows the saloon boot lid to open on its own or - to allow for bulkier items to be loaded – it will open in tandem with the rear window. The added conv...Read the full article

Twin Door System eh! Just what difference would it make opening the whole tailgate instead of the 'saloon lid' to even load small items? Hatch and saloons are designed to offer different types flexibility from each other, hence why many marques offer different body styles. What a gimmick.

I love it! Having had a Skoda for two years putting plenty of miles on it, I know how well built and reliable they are.

When my 159 is due for replacement, I will seriously consider it.

     Hi guys,

I'm the czech guy outthere :-). I have to say that liftback taigate is a great thing. Skoda has been having a great success with this solution in octavia. The bay in saloons is usually much longer than higher and therefore it's difficult to load bigger objects like bycicle there, even though once fitted, they are accomodated without problem.

Don't think it's revolutionary, as it could equally be liftback only, but this is the marketing - give the saloon guys the saloon! Of course the torsional stiffness could have been better without this, but if it's gonna ride well, then what the hell :-).

Maybe there's market for saloon with added practicality, who knows - for skoda it will certainly pay off, as they don't plan to make a combi so it's the only way to keep the practically thinking people satisfied..

    cheers,

I wondered where i'd seen the back before, looks like another huge LEMON coming to the market.

Not exactly Lemon, but similar to the rear of the new Mondeo, which to my eyes is not very nice.

    Still love the car though.

Looks alright. I think Mercedes have nicked the headlights and turned them upside down for the new SL! Interior looks excellent. That said - financial reasons aside - can't imagine why the reader above would swap a 159 for this.

I would not swap it before the 159 was ready for changing. Company cars get changed about every 3 years. By which time I will have done the Alfa thing. The Superb, offers masses of space and with a young family would be a better choice, plus I would be going for the top of the range.

I like the front end styling far better than the bland Octavia and odd looking Fabia.

If Skoda facelifted the other two models with this styling I am sure they would sell many more.

I know what you been. I have a boy on the way in May so I'm handing in the keys to my Golf GTI 3dr in March and exchanging for a Volvo V50 'R Design', which is the sportiest looking thing with a big boot for the pushchair that I could afford.

Uncanny...find myself in the same position.

Details slightly changed but result is much the same .  Baby due in June.

I'm a user-chooser with the entire diesel VW, Skoda and Seat ranges available.

I currently have a Astra SRi Sporthatch but this is going back at the end of March and upto now is being replaced by a Seat Altea FR Diesel.  Friends say I should go for a Leon FR but cant help but think the extra space will come in handy.

Looked at the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia estates but they are just just so bland, especially the Octavia it might be, in the words of Autocar, `every car you'll ever need` but it is just so boring to look at.

Golf GT Sport 5 Door is good but pricey and lacks the space factor and they dont make it in an estate, and even if estate came in this spec it is just so ugly it would not make my wish list.

If only the Skoda looked better.
