  • Petition needed to stop Top Gear being in F1

    Apr 20, 2008 2:55 PM

Something needs to be done before it's too late.

Does anyone know if one has been started already, or how one goes about setting one up?

What is the best way to let the BBC know that F1 fans do not want the presenters of Top Gear involved with this serious sport of Formula 1 racing.

Hope someone has some idea of what can be done.

F1 is so boring you need to add as much 'entertainment' as possible because the procession, sorry 'racing' is like watching paint dry.

If the Top Gear crew could interview each of the hot grid girls after the start and first 3 laps, throughout the main bulk of the 'race' and then cut back to the 'procession' for the last 3 laps to see who didn't break down during the procession it would get my viewing back.

Clarkson commenting on F1... that would be a disaster of epic proportions! We would hear how boring Raikkonen is, that Ferrari should not win cause they are not cool anymore and that Red Bull is the best team cause they have nice paddock girls. Then it would be interesting hearing May commenting on racing lines. The only one standing out could be Hammond but even he cannot compete with Martin Brundle of course.

    Not an F1 fan then.

    Stick with Top Gear!!!!!!!!

So, um, who has actually said that "Top Gear" is going to be involved with the BBC's coverage of F1 or that any of TG's presenters will be commentating?

I've only heard about Richard Hammond being mooted as a programme presenter, not commentator, and even that was poo-pooed by Hammond himself as he doesn't hold much interest.

In addition it would almost certainly mean the end of Top Gear, as we know it at least, as it would be next to impossible for them to put together anywhere near a coherent and relevant programme (as coherent and relevant as TG gets that is!) given F1's schedule (I've been involved...I know how hard it is).

A bit too soon to be getting knickers in a twist, no?

Top Gear Presenters to Present Formula One on BBC????

Is this just a nasty rumour?

It would RUIN what's left, I will readily admit, of a crumbling entertainment, a boring procession of super-high-tech yet restricted, aerodynamic karts, for many whirling pointlessly around the same patch of tarmac again and again - BUT I HAVE TO WATCH IT.

Formula One IS my sport, my favourite grand spectacle, the excuse to kick back on odd Sunday afternoon's and RELAX to the whining, hypnotic, put-you-to-sleep mundanity of it all, the real excitement the statistical outcomes of potential fuelling stops, whether Raikkonen can take Eau Rouge AGAIN for the 60th time flat out... and without a doubt, Hamilton has really brought some fresh drama to it all...

BUT PLEASE FOR F*&^' S SAKE KEEP THAT T**T JEREMY CLARKSON AND TOP GEAR AWAY FROM FORMULA ONE, or it will KILL the sport for those of us - well me certainly - who love Formula One, through thick and thin.

People like me who also happen to love cars and detest the way these admittedly at times funny and entertaining prats have turned a programme about cars into a programme about themselves and their celebrity guests.  FIfth Gear, the Used Car Show, EVERY other televsion programme about cars is more palatable than Top Gear. I don't care if it's viewed by millions of Grammy-awarding Americans, or if Marakesh has paid millions for it.  These same viewers would be just as happy if Clarkson, May and Hammond were talking about fishing. And yes, I DO watch Top Gear, and I DO laugh at their antics, it's nice seeing three grown men having such fun on telly - but I primarily watch it cos it has CARS in it.

AM I the only car nut who buys every other car magazine religiously - Autocar, CAR and EVO certainly - but NEVER the Top Gear Magazine?  Not once?

Please, just tell me it isn't so........   and where's that petition...?

p.s. it was the end note in Steve Sutcliffe's column that got me this aggrieved.  Grrrrrrrrr.   Steve, never in the thousands of words you've written - love 'em mostly - have I ever felt upset enough to want to write back.  Say hi and best of luck to Monkey too.

You know what-give them a chance!

NOTHING has drawn me to watch F1 over the past few years NOTHING!!!

Lets see what 'they' can do first before spouting on about ifs and maybes!!

And by the way, I have never bought an edition of The top gear magazine, yet I have every single copy of EVO under my bed--ahem, lets see what happens now that a few journos have left though!!

I'm happy F1 is moving to BBC - it's where it belongs, and no commercials, but I'd rather see Murray bought out of retirement, given the equivalent of TV-Presenter-Viagra, than have ANY of the Top Gear team involved.  Why?  Clarkson is the antithesis of what F1 represents.  And I DO enjoy watching the three of them hoon about and spend their time laughing and larking about, spending the BBC license payers money on... larking about and enjoying themselves.  But not one of them can come close to Martin Brundle's experienced, detailed and incisve presentation.

F1 is a serious business.  Top Gear is NOT a serious car programme.

I think you messed up your title a bit there. It should have said petition to make sure Top Gear is in F1. The current ITV team is quite boring at the moment. I don't mind the commentators but the rest could show a little more enthusiasm.

I actually didn't know this was going to happen until now presuming it is going to happen. I hope it does.

    And that's that!

    The title is right.

This is an F1 show, not another episode of Top Gear.  I also do love Top Gear, but that is a different kind of program to F1 sports coverage.

Further, much as people have complained about Autocar staffers thinking that they are (alledgedly) the star of the show, surely F1 as a sport should be able the racing and not the presenters.

This all came about because someone said that Richard Hammond might front the show i.e. the Steve Ryder role.  The BBC have denied it all anyway.

Re: the title though, since when has a petition ever worked?!

    Bring it!!

But what about those of us boys and girls that like F1 but aren't interested in girls?

I don't think even the Top Gear clowns could liven up F1.  I'm glad F1 exists because it makes the cars we all drive much better, but as entertainment on TV it's just rubbish.  The only entertaining part is Martin Brundle's grid walk that he does before the start chatting to random freeloaders.  There's more action in any 2 seconds of MotoGP than a whole season of F1.  Even Valentino Rossi winning everything in sight several years in a row couldn't dull it down.

I also think this is a rather poinless topic because the Top Gear thing will never happen in a month of sundays anyway so why get worked up about it.
