Good sport suspension is very hard to find

Andrew Frankel

A word to the wise. Next time you’re speccing a new car and find yourself automatically ticking the ‘sports suspension’ box, save yourself several hundred quid and stick to the normal springs. That's because of all the cars currently on sale I driven with and without sport suspension just one, the Jaguar XJ, has ever been improved by it.

Across the board, from expensive Porsches to cheap Fords, all your money buys you is seriously degraded ride quality for an almost entirely perceived rather than real improvement in handling and grip. A BMW 3-series is compromised by it, the new Ford Mondeo near enough ruined.

It’s only real value is to let you tell mates your new wheels has sports suspension, and if that’s worth hundreds of pounds to you, you have my sympathy. If not, save yourself the money and drive a better car.

Agree 100% on the Sports suspension issue. I have had a BMW 325 for 2 yrs from new and cant wait to get something which doesn't shake my teeth out on the tracks which pass as roads in this country.  Trouble is the M Sport cars are the only ones which come with decent seats.

I have to disagree. I had an Audi A3 with sports suspension and while I agree the ride was very hard, it wasn't until I drove an A3 with standard suspension that I realized how soft and floaty the ordinary car is.

No way would I have purchased one with the standard suspension. And this is in Ireland with some of the roughest roads around.
