New Renault Laguna can't hold a candle to our Mondeo

Mike Duff

Took the a shiny new Renault Laguna home the other night, the first time I'd driven it in the UK. As custodian of Autocar's Mondeo I was keen to see how the big French barge would compare - and to see if I’d made the right choice of wheels for the next year.

I shouldn't have worried. Although there's lots to like about the Laguna, including what's probably the best-quality interior ever installed in a French car, it's in the field adjacent to the Mondeo's ballpark when it comes to dynamic performance.

Indeed, 130 miles in the Renault gave me a fascinating perspective on just how good the Mondy is at dealing with the travails of the British motorway. The Laguna bounces and heaves over ridges that the Ford doesn't even notice, the springy-feeling steering is under-geared and the control interface feels over-complicated and confused next to the Mondeo's clear, easy-to-use touch screen.

I remember when the previous Laguna came out (just after the last gen Mondeo was introduced), Renault put out an ill-advised press release boasting that the Ford would enjoy "the shortest honeymoon in history." Wasn't true then, isn't true now.

I have driven, on the motorway, in the last few weeks the same journey to and from the Midlands to South London in a selection of hired cars from this class including the Mondeo.

They all felt the same, the all performed the same, they all sounded the same.

The stereo in the Passat was the only thing that seperated them. It was rather good.

You don't buy these for the pleasure of driving - you buy them to do a job - no more/no less.

Based on looks of this model and past experience of the last model, I wouldn't touch another Laguna.

It looks hideous!

agree with scummyplum really. Though Autocar is great for dynamic analysis, far too much emphasis is placed on handling and cornering prowess than most drivers ever warrant. Having inspected both cars at the Frankfurt show I was far more impressed with the Renault's design and build than the Mondeo. In fact the dashboard design and shiny ritzy Mondeo plastics would instantly ensure it never made it past the first round if i was in the market for a car like this.

Laguna's interior is a a thing of wonder next to the Mondeo's.

I'm quite sure Ford cars in Uk are different from other places in the world, here in Portugal they are as bad (or as good) as any other car.

But one thing I know, new Laguna has much better build quality than any Mondeo, interior plastics are much better, trunk is much better finished (Mondeo is a misery).

In my point of view Laguna only lacks some space (given the exterior dimensions), but with a better build quality, engines are much better (faster and refined), 6 speed gearbox in every model, noise is much better controlled and so on.

Here in Portugal Renault is also cheaper and has better representation (the best brand here).
