Nice guys can win in F1

John McIlroy
In 2005, as part of my duties as Formula Three Euroseries reporter for Autosport, I interviewed a young man called Sebastian Vettel.

Well, actually, he was more of a boy back then, still only 17 at the time. With his slightly scruffy hairdo and beaming smile, he made me feel a decidedly elderly 31 as he sat for a good half-hour chatting about his matter-of-fact attitude to racing, his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton (who was running away with the F3 series at the time) and his love of British music and comedy.

Oh, and the fact that his schoolteacher had been very understanding to allow him so many Fridays off; he'd really have struggled without all those free practice sessions.

On Saturday I watched as Vettel became Formula One's youngest ever pole-sitter, aged just 21. And when I turned on my television yesterday and saw the wet conditions, I grew confident that Vettel - always a star turn on slippery circuits - would be able to turn that into a race win.

Sure enough, he dominated the race, easing away from Heikki Kovalainen in the early stages, then mastering intermediate tyres on a drying track to become F1's youngest ever race-winner.

And I smiled. From what I hear, Sebastian has not allowed the F1 paddock sharks to affect his friendly, personable attitude, so this year's Italian GP was proof that nice guys can win. He'll do so again, too.

I have to agree.

Its great for F1 that Vettel has done this. The commentator James Allen said something like its one the biggest events in F1 history. At first I thought steady on there, but when you take into account the team was orignally a Minardi then its not a bad shout.

I hope he stays humble and keeps the care free friendly attitude, though if he gets a championship winning car then something tells me the Mr nice guy image may change.

Lewis was the same when he burst onto the scene, but even though the boy is awesome, some of his comments on his own ability leave you cringing at times.

My advice would be to Vettel is you know your good, but let other people say that, not you.

Though the majority of champions arent nice guys for understandable reasons.....apart from maybe the GBR Olympic team.

Was great to watch - Vettel win, and the race had a few moments too.  EVeryone's glowing enthusiasm for Vettel is refreshing.

And yes, the GBR Olympic team was a joy as well!
