California breezin'

Hilton Holloway

It’s hard not to feel better about life, wandering around a neat and tidy southern Californian city with the sun shining. But I can guarantee that you’ll also breath much more easily in this state.

Since the late 1960s, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has been at the forefront of driving down engine pollution.

It was California that demanded 1975-model year cars achieve massive reductions in pollution. Car makers said they couldn’t meet the targets, but eventually did by detuning engines and embracing the catalytic converter.

Honda, however, met the regulations with its landmark Civic CVCC engine, which was so clean it didn’t even need a cat.

Moreover, CARB effectively banned diesel cars in 2000 when they decided that ‘toxic’ particulates were a serious threat to human health.

Only Mercedes BlueTec engines have recently managed to meet the super-tight Californian diesel emissions regulations.

No surprise then, that California uses buses powered by super-clean Compressed Natural Gas.

UK politicians, particularly Ken Livingstone, make a huge song and dance about micro reductions in CO2, while happily gassing people with belching diesel buses and cabs.

Like many areas in UK life, we get hype, while the rest of the world gets action.

Good points well made.

Harry, as an admirer of your no nonsense cut-the BS style, please don't let a fan down with any more articles admiring the Californians pls!

I don't know which 'super clean' compressed natural Gas the Orange State runs its buses on but you can bet, like all State Politburo funded schemes, its subsidised to the hilt and would be bankrupt without the usual extortion from motorists pockets.

Californian started a lot of modern State-fascism trends like banning smoking as well as VIP bus lanes and a politician now wants to make anorexia illegal which pushes State inference in our bodies to yet new levels of legalised interference and bullying.

Comments about Red Ken and Britain bang on. Saw 2 artciles on CNN News yesterday.

A 101 year old Brit called Buster who's running the marathon. His 'sercret' to longegivity is to stop for a pint and a fag when he trains. And a Kiwi who runs 5 hills a day, thought of a ciggy when he's finished drives him on (you'd never see that on BBC Politburo TV!).

The article was followed by the global food crisis and a very nervous British Govt minister explaining they've already launched a review of Ethanol in the month they launched Ethanol. Anyone think these clowns are up a creek without a paddle on this one?

Hope you look into the Ethanol farce and suggest some immediate resignations for all those involved
