Is Chrysler better off being split up?

Chas Hallett
Here in Detroit for the motor show which starts tomorrow. I hooked up with an American journalist friend of mine last night and he reckoned the local feeling was the Chrysler group was going to struggle now that its been hived off from Mercedes.
In fact rumours are circulating that it could be split up into its three separare companies and flogged off. So we came up with a business proposal over a burger. Sell Chrysler to the Chinese, ideally Chery because the links are already in place. Don't forget that the companies are collaborating on the Hornet supermini.
Nissan needs a US partner so it could take Dodge and use Nissan Renault platforms to give it a decent line up.
Meanwhile GM could take over Jeep and turn it into the proper upmarket 4x4 brand it deserves to be. A sort of better value Land Rover if you like.
Well, you never know...
