Would you buy a car from an MP?

James Ruppert

Probably not, if the last few weeks news stories are to be believed.

Peter Hain mislaid an amount of money that would buy you a pretty high end Mercedes, or decent Aston for that matter. Then there is Derek Conway (who I never knew existed until this week), who hasn’t been entirely transparent about his parliamentary expenses; they would keep most of us taxed and insured for the best part of a decade or two.

The trouble is that MPs receive some very generous allowances for their travel, which distances them from the everyday reality of transport costs that we have to deal with. That’s why they don’t seem as receptive as they should be about our plight when it comes to road and fuel taxes.

It is interesting to see that they are entitled to with travel all over the country for free whereas we would have to pay just to get to work. Lets quote from the parliamentary website: 'the first 10,000 miles per year is charged at the rate of 40p per mile, and over 10,000 it’s 25p per mile. This is better than 2004/05 mileage rate: which was the first 20,000 miles per year at the rate of 57.7p per mile, and over 20,000 at 26.6p per mile.'

Then there is the first class rail travel and air travel and, oh yes, if you are a right hon' MP with a push bike you can claim an absolutely astounding 20p per mile. Since when did cycling anywhere cost you 20p? The motorbike mileage rate is 24p per mile.

In 2005 it was reported in the Sunday Times that MPs clock up £3m in mileage allowance and one MP drove more than 62,000 miles on parliamentary business, netting mileage expenses of £22,845. It was not possible for Parliament to reveal who that MP was.

So would you buy a car from an MP that has done at least 124,000 miles since 2005?

I have been banging on for several years about the self serving feeders that languish in Westminster. They do not have to account for their expenditures as any person in business (or the majority of the public sector for that matter). Paying your wife as a pa/secretary is merely adding to your family income. And its amazing how they always manage to claim right up to the limit. They have the time to work that out but not produce an expenses sheet, which is de rigeur in business. Strange. Their mileage allowances are laughable. My ex who is a nurse can only claim mileage allowance of some 12p. The trust she works for has not put it up for more than a decade. in fact they are now subsidising their employer because they have to pay for and maintain their vehicles. Yet the Trust sets standards and guidelines for what they drive. As for the MP who drove 62000 miles for parliamentary business. I sa y it here and now 'LIAR' sir, you are a liar. Under the freedom of information act you should be able to obtain his identity. But then this government does everything in its power to abuse the FOI system. And as for being paid 20p per mile to pedal to work? Thank god its not an MEP, they probably get even more.

No I woldn't buy a car from an MP because if they ran a business the way they run Govt the price woul be 3 times the cost of a properly run competitor.

For example Dept of Transport plan to spend £10-£15bn over the next 10yrs to 'improve and modernise transport' and the stated target is they predict congestion to be 15-30% worse!

If any business planned that sort of expenditure with a target to fail to resolve the congestion the managers would be sacked.

Similarly Red Ken has spent £200-£250M a year of motorists money to solve 'congestion' in his London transport system. The congestion, despite a 30% drop in car numbers, is absolutely no different to the day CC started. That type of investment for that type of failure would have Ken out by his ear and probably never to work to gain any meaningful employment again.

Yet both these bunch of clowns are still in office!!
