Guilty pleasures

Chas Hallett

Guilty pleasures. When it comes to cars I’ve got plenty of them. In no particular order here goes:

My favourite Ferrari is the 612 Scaglietti (200mph and four seats, yes please), I really like the Skoda Roomster, my favourite luxury saloon is the Lexus LS460, I love heated seats, I’d rather have an auto ‘box (except on serious sports cars), anything with a three-cylinder engine always gets my vote, I find myself hankering after the new Citroen C5 and Renault Laguna Coupe, I’d rather have an Aston V8 Roadster than the coupe and I think that the Ford S-Max is probably the best car on sale in Britain.

I’m sure that there’s plenty more but tell me yours first…

Makes all the big decisions at Autocar, including whether he’ll drive the Aston, or the Kia, home. Is currently preoccupied by small turbo petrol engines and whether the internal combustion engine is doomed.

I have a thing for dirty, crappy cars. Like a dusty black Camaro Iroc-Z. And those aerodynamic alloy wheels from the 80's that every supercar sported, the flat disc looking ones, as on the XJ220, EB110 etc. The EB110 is another. Reminds me of the TGV, highly appropriate for a Bugatti, now that I think about it. I love low spec hatch backs with small engines as well. That may be a budgetary thing, but they always make you feel better than they should.

Everything about the most recent possible Delta Integrale, the wheels on a 205 GTi 1.9, the Recaro seats in a Capri 3.0S, driving a 2CV Charleston, the dash from a 5 Turbo 1, the stance of the Fiesta 1.3 Supersport, oh and a GT3 in white with black wheels.  Thanks.

I really have a thing for original Rover 75s. Not so strange you may think, best of a bunch, built by BMW, tweaked by British engineers (do we have the midas touch when it comes to the finessing of a car?) Except the thing is I'm 22!

Personally I would have it in its Launch greeny/blue colour, with the 'Serpent' 18" alloys and it HAS to have the xenon headlamps. They somehow completely modernise the look of it. If it could be retrofitted with the 'stang V8, possibly fettled by Roush, that would be perfect, so I could shock some chav boy racers and maybe smoke a few estate agents who are too big for their boots in a de-badged BMW 320d or Z4 2.0 in my cream leather lined interior.

Anyone else share this guilty pleasure? Oh, just me then...

I'd have a scaglietti in an instant, or would if the bloody thing would arrive ( it's 31 months, 3 weeks and 4 days by the way, ferrari) I would get a Ford GT, then get a focus and have a laugh trying to put the V8 in the focus, oh and the S-Max by far the best car on sale, although i went for a Q7 instead. Odd i know. I will admit, I have taken quite a liking to an RS6, it's just trying to dignify paying more for that than my CLS.
