Veyron vs Ronaldo: brilliant YouTube viewing

Steve Sutcliffe

You’ve got to love YouTube, especially if you’re a car nut. My favourite clip of the moment is a viral ad for the deliciously named Nike Mercurial Vapor IV football boot, and it features none other than Cristiano Ronaldo and a Bugatti Veyron, racing each other along what looks like the back straight at Cadwell Park.

It’s clearly a very professionally produced clip that’s been put on YouTube to try and lend it underground value, a bit like the Flat Eric vids of 10 years ago which almost single-handedly turned the fortunes of Levi jeans around. Whatever the case, it’s a must-watch if you're into motors.

To begin with it’s all moody black and white scenes of Ronaldo and crew skulking around ‘somewhere outside Manchester’, presumably in search of their enemy – in this case a white Bugatti Veyron. Eventually it cuts into colour and we end up at Cadewll (I think it’s Cadwell, but I’m not 100 per cent certain) where we see Ronaldo warming up at the side of the track while Veyron and driver brace themselves for the duel.

I’m not sure how they did it but whoever produced the vid then manages to make it look as if Ronaldo leaves the Veyron for dead on the ‘go’ of ready-steady-go, and just as the Bugatti is about to overhaul him, the finish line appears and Ronaldo stops.

Then he turns round and we are introduced to the catch, the bit that makes you smirk and realise it’s all a bit of a wind up. Because the race is in two directions, which means the Veyron – now travelling at huge speed – has to stop, select reverse and try to catch Ronaldo back to the start line. In reverse gear.

In the end it’s pretty much a dead heat, and from nowhere Ronaldo manages to summon one of the cheekiest grins you’ll ever see on the face of a Premier League football player. Here’s the link so you can watch it right now.

Like I say, YouTube: you've got to love it.
