The most ridiculous press conference on record?

Andrew Frankel

A small insight into the way minds work at Porsche. At the launch of the new and apocalyptically quick GT2, the journalists all filed into a large room where we put on headphones to listen to the translation from German of the presentation made by the car’s chief engineer.

Nothing strange in this at all, you might think. Except this: the first language of every single journalist in that room that day was English. Fair enough, you might still think – chief engineers cannot be expected to be gifted linguists too. But this one didn’t need to be: the GT2’s chief engineer comes from Swansea.

So there you have it; a man from Wales talking to a room full of Brits in German, that was being translated back into English. Madness. But then I suppose departing from the launch script would never have done for the company that does everything according to plan.

About Andrew Frankel

Talents are limited to "driving cars and writing English." In 19th century France he would, therefore, have been stuffed; as it is, Andrew's the perfect Autocar road test writer.
