Mercedes' soft roader has become a much better car in its evolution to the mark II model, and an even less efficient way in which to tackle mud. For the most part that's a good thing, because the ML now has the on-road sophistication to make even the BMW X5 seem slightly crude. The range of engines is good too, and the interior is now a genuine strong point. Be under no illusion though: if you want to go off-road buy a Land Rover, because other than in muddy car parks the ML isn't too clever.
