A tip: the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are basically the same car. But the Sportage is marginally better and, if you're after a cheap and cheerful soft-roader, certainly worth considering. Two-litre petrol or diesel-engined models are the ones to go for. Range-topping 2.7-litre V6 is smoother but hardly any faster.
