Ferrari has taken the wraps off the new Scuderia Spider 16M, basically a roadster version of the 430 Scuderia, featuring most of the same chassis upgrades that have won the coupe such acclaim.

The company claims that the Spider 16M is quicker around its Fiorano testing circuit than any other open-topped Ferrari road car, although the exact margin between it and the 430 Scuderia hasn’t been revealed. 499 examples of the 16M will be built for all global markets, with an unspecified number coming to the UK.

Prices have just been announced and put the Scuderia Spider at £202,000, making it £29375 more expensive than the coupe.

Ferrari says that the Scuderia Spider 16M will be available with the option of a unique ‘tricolore’ colour scheme as part of the Carrozzeria Scaglietti personalisation programme. The car also gets a plaque on its rear grille commemorating Ferrari’s 16th Formula One Constructor’s Championship – which also inspired its name.

Power comes from the same 503bhp V8 engine that is fitted to the 430 Scuderia, and Ferrari claims that the Spider 16M is 80kg lighter than the F430 Spider it’s based on, giving a power-to-weight ratio of 375bhp-per-tonne. ‘F1-Trac’, an electronic differential and launch control mean it should hit 62mph from rest in just 3.7secs, going onto a top speed of 196mph.
