Hyundai has unveiled a new high performance diesel engine designed to boost sales of its SUVs and saloons.

Dubbed the ‘R-engine’, the all-alloy common rail unit will be available in 2.0 and 2.2-litre capacity and is compliant with Euro 5 emissions regulations.

The smaller engine produces 181bhp and 289lb ft of torque, whilst the bigger unit takes over as Hyundai UK’s most powerful diesel with 197bhp and 335lb ft of torque.

The first cars to get the new diesel will be the next generation Tucson and facelifted Santa Fe, which will both arrive in showrooms in early 2010. Hyundai’s new i40 estate and saloon will also get the 2.0-litre R-engine later in 2010.

No economy or emissions details have been published but sources inside the company maintain that the 2.0-litre R-engine will set a new benchmark so expect CO2 output close to 120g/km and a combined fuel consumption of over 60mpg.
