Tata Motors has announced a new site for its Nano factory after the previous plant in Singur was abandoned following violent clashes over land ownership.
After receiving proposals from several Indian states, Tata has confirmed that it will relocate the Nano factory to a 1100-acre site in Gujarat, India. The giant India conglomerate, which owns Jaguar Land Rover, said in an official announcement that the move will be in “the best interest of the project’”.
The factory will initially produce around 250,000 of the ultra-cheap Nano a year, but it will be designed to have a maximum capacity of 500,000 cars. When it opens, the plant will generate 10,000 jobs in the region.
Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata said that the new site “was already under the possession of the state government” and that the new factory would have “a cascading impact on the state’s economy.”
While the new factory is under construction, Tata plans to manufacture the Nano at its existing facilities in Pune and Pantnagar. The city car is scheduled to be launched next year.
