Citroen revealed final details of its new C3 Picasso yesterday at a motor show preview, a month after we saw the first pictures of the small MPV.

Due to be unveiled at the Paris show on 2 October, the C3 Picasso is intended to alter the way people think about MPVs, offering a car-like driving experience with a practical interior and attractive, fashionable looks.

It will be built in PSA’s Trnava factory in Slovakia, and Citroen hopes to sell up to 110,000 units of what the company is calling “the magic box” because of its spacious interior and box-shaped design. The car is based on a modified version of PSA’s PF1 platform which (in various forms) also underpins the Peugeot 207, current C3 and C2.

Targeted at the Vauxhall Meriva, Renault Modus and Nissan Note, the C3 Picasso can claim class-leading boot capacity, with 500 litres with the rear seats up and 1506 litres with the 60/40 split rear bench folded flat.

The rear seats also recline and slide individually, and the front passenger seat can be folded down to form a picnic table.

We won’t know whether the new C3 Picasso can really deliver all that Citroen is promising until we get behind the wheel early next year, and the new Vauxhall Meriva will also be causing problems for the latest Picasso.

But on first impressions it’s easy to believe that the latest Citroen creation will continue the brand’s run of successful MPVs.
