Official pictures of the electric Chevrolet Volt have been leaked onto the internet.

The images show various key GM officials in front of the car, which has lost the concept’s blistered wheel arches, wrap-around windows and sharp lines in favour of a more subtle (and cheaper to produce) body shape.

However, plenty of the Volt’s key features have made it through to production. The narrow rear lights, aerodynamic wing mirrors and smooth, split front grille are all present, as is the high, coupe-like rear boot line. The car has also gained a distinctive stepped door top unlike anything else in production today.

The Chevrolet Volt will be the first mass-produced electric vehicle of modern times, capable of running for 40 miles on electric power alone. It uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine to charge the batteries, and can also be plugged in to the mains.

It is due to launch in America in 2010, with European sales starting in 2011.
