Tesla Motors’ next vehicle, codenamed Whitestar, will go into production in 2010 and offer mid-range practicality aimed at families, in direct contrast to the niche all-electric Tesla Roadster the company has made its name with.
The new car will be built in California, not New Mexico as previously planned, and will be a high-volume product. According to Telsa CEO Ze'ev Drori, the car's styling is nearly finished and the firm is now designing the factory.
Tesla is also planning a ‘range extender’ version of the Whitestar to rival the Chevrolet Volt, which will use a small petrol engine to charge a battery pack and drive an electric motor.
The firm then wants to continue to bring down the price of electric cars and plans to launch a cheaper, entry-level model codenamed Bluestar.
