The forthcoming Chevrolet Camaro has already been causing excitement in America, but what looks like a prototype of the high-performance ‘SS’ version has crossed the Atlantic for a testing session at the Nurburgring.

The new muscle car goes on sale in the ‘States early next year but hasn’t been confirmed for sale in Europe. GM hasn’t announced any plans to engineer a right-hand drive version, but sources within GM UK say that British bosses are battling hard for us to get a version with the steering wheel reversed - something Ford hasn’t done with the current-generation Mustang.

The standard Camaro will be available with both V6 and V8 powerplants, with the SS likely to get a 400bhp version of GM’s 6.0-litre ‘LS2’ V8 engine.

The original Camaro SS was one of the first muscle cars, being available with a range of engines including a 375bhp 6.5-litre V8 when it was introduced in 1967. The previous generation Camaro was sold briefly – and unsuccessfully – in the UK before being dropped in 2002.
