The man responsible for designing cars as diverse as the first-generation BMW Mini, the new Fiat 500 and Ferrari F430 has confirmed that he has left his position as head of design for Alfa Romeo.

Stephenson was appointed as head of the Centre Stile Alfa Romeo as recently as June 2007, after a stint overseeing Fiat and Lancia vehicle styling. During that period he oversaw the Grande Punto, Bravo and the new 500. His departure from Alfa is regarded as a surprise, although his decision to part ways may well be connected to the appointment of former Pininfarina boss, Lorenzo Ramaciotti, as overall head of the Fiat Group’s design direction.

As one of the most influential modern car design bosses, Stephenson can expect to find his services in strong demand among rival manufacturers. He will be replaced at Alfa by Austrian Christopher Reitz.
