F1 team Scuderia Toro Rosso is up for sale, Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has confirmed. A new proprietor could be in place by the end of next season.

New F1 rules that come into force in 2010 will outlaw ‘customer cars’, meaning that Toro Rosso will no longer be allowed to run as Red Bull’s junior team.

Toro Rosso currently buys, designs and builds its cars in conjunction with Red Bull, which has been deemed an unfair advantage.

“We will only sell the team if it is put into safe hands,” Mateschitz told Motorsport Aktuel. “We will not sell Toro Rosso during the 2008 season, but it will be before 2010.”

The Italian outfit was formed when Mateschitz bought Minardi from Paul Stoddart in 2006. He owns the company jointly with veteran racer Gerhard Berger.

Speculation about potential new custodians is already rife. Berger hosted Russian businessman Roustam Tariko at the Australian GP last weekend. He was previously involved in a bid with Eddie Irvine to buy an F1 team.
