Skoda has revealed the first images of the car that will become its next rally challenger: the Fabia Super 2000.
Based on rallying's newest category, which features normally aspirated
engines, relatively simple four-wheel drive systems and sequential gearboxes, the new Fabia has just started testing ahead of a rally debut later this year. Its 2.0-litre engine produces between 260bhp and 280bhp.
Super 2000 is designed primarily as a customer category; however, with the main WRC itself likely to adopt the rules instead of ultra-expensive World Rally Cars in years to come, the second-generation Fabia could yet form the basis of an official factory team.
However, Dr Eckhard Scholz, head of Skoda Technological Development, has said that the immediate plan is to "optimise and certify the vehicle so that we can use it on both national and international levels. Then we are also planning to offer the vehicle to private teams."
The Fabia S2000 is likely to weigh in at around £200,000, half the price of a current World Rally Car. But if Skoda fancied releasing a cheaper road going model with the same bodykit, we'd have no complaints.
