It’s a highly confusing state of affairs, but according to Autocar’s sources, Mercedes-Benz will release two new 700bhp-plus supercars over the next five years – and both will be called SLC.

As we understand it the firm is working on two separate projects, one a hardcore version of the new SL for 2009, the other an AMG-developed replacement for the Mercedes SLR McLaren headed for the road two years later. Both will use AMG’s own new 6.0-litre twin-turbochaged V8 engine, and we’ve caught both of them on camera, undergoing development testing.
