Verdict
With a blend of competitive pricing, serious space and a VW badge, the Fox deserves to be near the top of the shortlist of anyone looking for a modern city car. It’s not as clever or advanced as some of its rivals, and you will look in vain for any dynamic excitement. But solid construction and unpretentious practicality give it a strong rational appeal, while the entry-level 1.2-litre engine delivers more than adequate performance for its natural urban environment. It’s just a shame that it couldn’t be a bit more exciting.
