Test Date 10 October 2007
Price When New £17,618
Verdict
There is a lot to like about the new Impreza, but it feels like a job half done. Subaru’s intention to create a car capable of appealing to the mainstream market is commendable, but only the WRX and STI versions kept the previous generation alive in a marketplace that has long since turned away from non-premium saloons.
The family hatch has moved on while Subaru has been developing the Impreza and it feels like it has been optimised against last-generation rivals. There are enough cheap-feeling materials to deny it the quality interior that buyers now demand.
There is hope — Subaru’s decision to develop a new diesel will broaden the Impreza’s appeal, while the STI version should deliver fire-breathing excitement. But until they arrive, the Impreza cannot match its mainstream rivals.
