Verdict
Without consideration for running costs, the CX-7 would be walking away with a commendable four stars. In many ways the car represents an impressive and genuinely intriguing SUV crossover; its performance is remarkable, its handling tidy and the cabin mixes a tempting standard equipment list with neat sporting touches. If Mazda’s objective was to carve another niche, it has succeeded.
We’d point to the peculiarity that this is an SUV designed not to go off road, and that despite its exterior size the CX-7 isn’t especially spacious inside. But by far the biggest drawback is that with no diesel option, it could prove ruinous to run. Obviously Mazda is aware of this and it has priced the CX-7 extremely competitively, which provides some consolation. But not enough to prevent us knocking half a star from our overall rating.
