Road Test
Ford Fiesta (02-) 1.25 LX 3dr Hatchback
Test Date 23 July 2003
Price When New £9,245
Verdict
The increased performance, refinement and economy of the 1.25 are ample compensation for any loss of low down flexibility. But is that reason enough to choose the smallest-engined Fiesta over any of its key rivals? Possibly not.
Though an engaging chassis and improved entry-level engine will count for much, the Fiesta is not the golden boy it once was. At £8995 a Nissan Micra 1.2SE costs £395 more and, though smaller inside, eats the Fiesta in a straight line and comes with side airbags and air conditioning as standard – equipment that would add £950 to the Ford’s base price.
The Ford’s absence of anti-lock is particularly unforgivable. For many buyers the funkier, better value Micra will be a stronger package.
