Verdict
Any car developed for a market that values image over ability is always going to struggle to win over hard-core enthusiasts. Viewed in this context the VTS is a successful product that makes a fine package, considering its running costs. But we can’t hide a tinge of disappointment that it fails to continue the tradition of hot Citroëns past. And we find it hard to forgive the poor engine response, feel-free steering, unsupportive seats and iffy instrumentation; success in these areas remains the bedrock of a sporty car, regardless of price. The VTS is a fine warm hatch, but if this is the future of the GTi we may have to look to the past to get our thrills.
