Road Test
Subaru Impreza 2.0 RX
Test date 10 October 2007
Price as tested £17,995
For Reassurance of 4wd, good dynamics, charismatic flat-four engine
AgainstAnaemic performance, mediocre economy and emissions, bland styling
Subaru’s decision to launch this Impreza without any turbocharged performance derivatives is a brave one. The Mk1 2000 Turbo quickly acquired cult status as the spiritual successor to the Escort RS Cosworth and Lancia Delta Integrale, its sales success mirroring Subaru’s assault on the World Rally Championship. Since then, Subaru has always struggled to make much of a case for non-turbocharged Imprezas in the UK. Of the previous-generation model a full 80 per cent were WRX or WRX STI versions.
