The A6 designation dates back to the mid-’90s but the origins of the car itself can be traced to VW’s 1965 takeover of Audi. The first 100 saloon arrived three years later, with the first signs of the fastidious attention to interior quality that would become the company’s hallmark. Five-cylinder petrol power and Avant estate bodies marked 1977 and, a year later, the first diesel — a 70bhp five — found its way under the nose. The fully galvanised 1983 version sported a ‘Cd 0.30’ badge on the quarter lights, boasting of the car’s aerodynamic prowess.
