Porsche Cayman 2.7
Test date 16 August 2006
Price as tested £36,220
What’s new?
An entry-level Cayman with the 2.7-litre engine from the Boxster, slighter wheels and brakes, one less gear and a price tag that's £7000 lighter.
But, apart from the wheels you’ll be hard pushed to distinguish it from the S model – look for black finishing to the nose, a one-piece exhaust and black brake calipers. This is our first taste of it on UK roads.
What’s it like?
There’s no denying it’s markedly slower, but does this matter? That depends on what you’re looking for. Track regulars will want more, but for road driving, especially on our congested roads, it’s fast enough.
The soundtrack, although less ferocious than the S, is actually sweeter, being more harmonious. Happily the delicate chassis balance and deliciously-weighted controls remain.
Should I buy one?
If you can stretch to the S, spend the extra, even if you have to forgo some options. But if £36,220 is your limit and a Boxster doesn’t appeal, the base Cayman represents a legitimate Porsche in its own right. It's just a shame that it’s not cheaper still.
